Working on cruise ships means living and working on board while crossing borders and calling at different ports. Along these routes, access to healthcare, advice on employment matters, care and support is not always readily available or consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Social protection for those working on board is fragmented across different countries, institutions and organisations. Employment-related benefits, public services, consular assistance, trade unions, maritime welfare organisations, and family and community networks differ in their scope and conditions of access. No single actor can meet all these needs alone. Understanding protection as a transnational web allows us to recognise the importance of the connections among those involved, as well as the gaps and difficulties that persist. It also helps us understand the efforts women workers themselves make to find information, establish contacts and obtain help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Flores en el mar, we aim to make available resources more visible and accessible. We are therefore gathering information about services and support centres that women working on cruise ships can turn to during their port calls in Montevideo and Punta del Este.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharing this information helps connect workers with those who can offer guidance and assistance, and strengthens links between work at sea and the resources available ashore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
